Silverman (United Kingdom) -
«Nature of Illusion» |
|
| LP+CD Limited edition, Beta Lactam
Ring |
| 32.00 €URO |
|
The first 200 copies include the bonus
CD ‘Woodland Calling'. Features Edward Ka-Spel on vocals.
One of the truest indications of a good record is when
it sounds like something is starting to go wrong with
the car while listening to it. The latest Silverman
sounds at turns like the breaks are going, the belts
are slipping, the timing needs adjusting, the drive
shaft has a shot bearing and the clutch is failing.
Perhaps this is the very nature of illusion bespoke
in the title. NOI is a much more amorphous excursion
than some of Silverman's previous slow trance explorations,
though it does display his trademark fondness for going
to very quiet places. Through a polar silence comes
a ringing metallic that fades off into contrapuntal,
subsonic drones. A brief essay of percussives trails
back into the liquid void. The album is a series of
such interlocked and subtle sonic, largely non-melodic
shape shifts whose darkness is not so much morose as
it is simply casting shadows of and off the unknown.
Silverman has carved an abstract chasm of distant, organic
electronics that is best first opened away from one's
car.

|
|
Many Hands Should Throw Stones
is the eagerly awaited follow up to Sleeping Pictures'
debut Nether Edge, which was described by critics
as “A rare alchemy of melancholy and bitterness”.
The twelve new compositions which make up the new
release take the sounds of the first album into
new and different territories bringing to the album
a range of new influences and ideas. Whilst retaining
the acoustic feel of Nether Edge on a few of the
songs, Sleeping Pictures' music writer Gary Parsons
has brought a selection of new sonic arrangements
to this album. This includes sombre piano pieces,
experimental soundscapes and an expansion upon the
electric guitar work hinted at on their previous
release. The lyrics of vocalist Marc Blackie have
also began to explore new themes whilst retaining
his characteristic bleakness. With traces of dark
humour he explores the conditions of modern life,
love, sexuality and religion. Moreover Sleepig Pictures
musicians was collaborating with Sol Invictus &
to the forthcoming Lark Blames album (to be released
on OEC, stay tuned !) this album is an essential
purchase for those who have followed the work of
the band to date and also those keen to discover
new and diverse music within the noir genre. Jewel-box,
large booklet with all songs texts

| Ground-breaking,
highly inspired music: a deeply moving overall piece of
art, unmatched in the history of popular music. Surprisingly
electronic SOPOR AETERNUS are presenting themselves here,
and in doing so, they have brought to life such a powerful
and catchy album, which only very few people would ever
have expected them to do. Competently they are sailing
round the shoals of electronic pop-music of the last 30
years, while they are juggling with a astonishing multitude
of fresh (though undeniably dark) melodies that it really
makes it a pure joy to listen to. Produced by John A.
Rivers (DEAD CAN DANCE, Clan Of Xymox). |

Recorded at John Rivers ' legendary
Woodbine-Studio, where such well-known acts like Dead
Can Dance had been produced, the German-based Sopor
Aeternus & The Ensemble of Shadows have created
with their new concept-album another milestone of the
Gothic/Avant-garde. Endowed with a perfect sense for
drama and effect, the music of SOPOR AETERNUS is blending
the classical genre with the attitude of the contemporary
retro-ism of the 80's underground-culture, combining
complex string- and orchestral arrangements with the
weird peculiarity of the very own stylistic device;
being deadly serious, while at the same time having
a twinkle in the eye.
Inspired by Butoh and Kabuki , they
are fusing Chinese fiddles and Wagnerian trombones with
Death Rock drums and highly complicated bass or percussion
rhythms, combining slavish dulcimers, tubas and recorders
with the omnipresent death-knells, in order to build
the beautifully scaring background for a unique voice,
that is sometimes croaking with the malicious falsetto
of a dying animal, sometimes reciting suicide-mantras
with the sonorous baritone of an old man, only to turn
into the screaming lament of a living corpse, bearing
witness to the horrible atrocities of nightly visitors.
With Es reiten die Toten so
schnell – or: The Vampyre sucking at
his own Vein Sopor Aeternus & The Ensemble
of Shadows have produced a most powerful and genre-bending
classic that should quickly make its arrival into everybody's
record-collection!

martial» |
|
| Digipak CD 2006, Twilight Records |
| 14.00 €URO |
| This is the first album
by Stalingrad, the more orchestral side of Kirlian
Camera side-project. An amazing mixture of bombastic pompous
orchestration, combining neofolk elements with neoclassical
and industrial atmospheres. This limited re-release come
with a new artwork, remastered in very nice digipack.
But few years ago Stalingrad was an unknown act and they
impressed the audience and the presse with the track ‘Der
letzte flug’, which could be found on some compilations.
This full album 'Court-Martial' was released in 2002 by
SPKR , but nowaday its delete in all the mailorders and
the original label dont exist enymore. Opressive neo-classical,
utilising militant percussion and heavenly voices, though
some tracks have a more industrial feel. Perhaps the soundtrack
for a movie about the battle of Stalingrad?

Stoa (Germany) -
«Porta VIII» |
|
| Digipak CD 2004, Samadhi Musik |
| 15.00 €URO |
|
Two years after the impressive resonance
Stoa received on their debut-album Urthona
, it seemed almost impossible for Olaf and
Conny to top the quality of their debut. But with Porta
VIII they surely succeeded to record a more
than worthy follow-up. Porta VIII was
one of the bestselling Hyperium albums of all times
and got overwhelming reviews literally everywhere! This
CD is an album with a concept based on the fairy tale
"Ariadne et Barbe Bleue" by Maurice Maeterlinck. But
Porta VIII is a continuation of the original fairy tale.
This album too was selling extremely well in all kind
of countries worldwide and even entered the Mexican
charts. An even deeper exploration in the world of classically-tinted
ethereal music. Very orchestral and massive, their music
is realized through lots of instrumentals and Cornelia's
beautiful vocals.
One of the classics from the Hyperium-era
of Heavenly Voices, finally back in print after a very
long absence! “When the female vocalist sings, my heart
misses another beat.” - Music From The Empty Quarter.

Swans - «Cop/Young
God/Greed/Holy Money» |
|
| 2xCDs 2005, Some Bizarre |
| 19.00 €URO |
|
|
|
Originally released as three separate
LPs: COP, GREED, and HOLY MONEY plus the EP YOUNG GOD.
Swans play some of the most brutal songs that can still
be called music. This two-disc set collects the band's
third, fourth, and fifth albums, along with an early
EP. Clearly influenced by Throbbing Gristle and
Test Department, Swans take the basic template
of industrial music, remove the last vestiges of punk
rock--along with any semblance of humor--and create
something so punishing, so monumentally "heavy," that
it seems as though they really have to wrench out every
sound.
